Minister Chin-youb Chung supports for ‘the export of Korean healthcare system in OECD’

- Attending health minister’s meeting.. Discussing the export of medical supplies and telemedicine with Germany and Chile

Chin-youb Chung, minister of health and welfare attended OECD health minister’s meeting and talked about the way to export Korean healthcare system such as telemedicine etc. In the OECD meeting held in Paris, France on the 17th, OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurria, health ministers from 34 OECD members, and officials from international organizations such as WHO and World Bank etc. shared their opinions.

The meeting titled, ‘The Next Generation of Health Reforms’ discussed the effective ways to cope with global challenges such as the increase in chronic diseases and multiple diseases, technology innovation with high costs, and antibiotic resistance.

In the morning session, member countries agreed to unnecessary spending of healthcare budget such as overtreatment and overdose, excessive expense for new drugs, and false request for medical fees regardless of medical quality. And they shared political responses on these problems.

Minister Chung talked about the people-centered Korean healthcare system such as patient diagnosis using ICT, digitalization to request medical fees, prior check of overlapped and combined use of prescription drugs through drug utilization review system, and prior health checkup and enhancing medical accessibility for patients with chronic diseases. His announcement attracted attention from other countries.

In the afternoon session, they discussed the action agenda for the harmony of technology innovation and the healthcare system. The agenda included cost effectiveness in medical innovation such as the development of new drugs, strengthening capability of future healthcare experts, and the way to improve healthcare service quality using health data.

In the meeting, they adopted the minister’s declaration that includes increasing patient safety in medical services, decreasing inefficiency and wasting money, reflecting patients’ needs and preferences, and effective use of technology innovation such as new drugs and big data.

Meanwhile, Minister Chung had separate meetings with Chilean and German health ministers. At the meeting, they exchanged bilateral interests such as the advancement of telemedicine, the export of pharmaceutical and medical devices, and the cooperation in global healthcare crisis such as antibiotic resistance.

On the 16th, he met Chilean health minister, Carmen Gisele Castillo Taucher, and discussed the export of Korean medical supplies and the push for the pilot business of ICT-based telemedicine to carry out MOU made on April 2015.

To improve Chilean telemedicine in public medical area, the Ministry of health and welfare plans to conduct pilot businesses of the ICT-based telemedicine and chronic diseases monitoring for patients with diabetes, and high blood pressure etc. And he met German health Minister Hermann Grӧhe and discussed the agenda of G20 health minister’s meeting to be held in May 2017.

The G20 health minister’s meeting is the first meeting to deal with healthcare problems such as infectious diseases and antibiotic resistance etc. and Germany will be the presidency. Korea in charge of GHSA(global health security agenda) presidency and Germany have agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in healthcare field to come up with visible outcomes in the G20 meeting and summit.

Besides, Minister Chung asked his counterpart for continuous attention and support to make many Korean medicine-related companies take part in the world’s largest medical supplies exhibition to be held in Dusseldorf, Germany. And also, he asked to make Koran promising medical devices to the Germany market.

He said, “Korea will actively take part in various conferences such as the OECD health minister’s meeting, G20 health minister’s meeting (May in Germany), the 70th WHO general assembly (May in Swiss), and the 10th tripartite meeting with Japan and China (November in China) and cope with global healthcare issues such as antibiotic resistance and massive infectious diseases etc.”
